Why we are Superior - Our Process

Just like our favorite Great Lake, our substrates are SUPERIOR in every way!  Every substrate is meticulously hand-crafted following our strict 75-step process and using only the highest quality sustainably sourced or reclaimed woods available.

  • Each substrate is built starting with top-quality 1/4" cabinet grade B/BB Baltic Birch for the top.
  • Each cradle is individually cut and fit using either kiln dried Domestic or Exotic Hardwood.  We do not use CNC machines in our process.
  • Unlike store bought substrates, we do not use any nails, screws, staples, MDF or Pouring Board in any of our cradles. We only use top-quality Baltic Birch, Basswood and Premium Hardwoods.
  • Each cradle is reinforced exceptionally well using kiln dried Basswood.  This step helps to protect against warping*.
  • Each cradle is also completely sealed (front, back and sides) to further protect from warping and discoloration that can occur over time.
  • After sealing the Baltic Birch top, 4 individual coats of hard sandable Gesso are applied and sanded between each layer.  This step ensures a nice hard even surface to create on.
  • The hardwood cradle is also hand sanded, sealed and finished with 4- 6 coats (hand rubbed) of either marine grade varnish (for added UV protection) or Shellac depending on the type of hardwood used.  Both finishes bring out the natural beauty, depth and luster of the wood but also seal and protect it.
  • Every substrate is stamped with the Superior Art Substrates logo and hand numbered for authenticity.
  • One last visual inspection is done to ensure every single substrate is SUPERIOR in every way.  We hope you enjoy owning and creating your next masterpiece on one of our masterpieces!

A SUPERIOR START!
