This one is a Showstopper! This incredibly beautiful one-of-a-kind 24 x 24” quarter-sawn Sycamore and Baltic Birch wooden cradled hardwood substrate shimmers with amazing life! You will love the soft snakeskin appearance of this unique piece.  Just as only mother nature can grow, wood with amazing figure and scales which only show when the log is quarter-sawn. Making this substrate truly unique.  The glossy appearance of the cradle provides depth and interest like no other! Rich light honey brown serves as the backdrop for the natural caramel snakeskin pattern that dance along the surface.  No two boards are ever exactly the same.

This individually numbered substrate (SAS26) arrives to you ready to go out of the box.  This cradle has been pre-sealed top, bottom and sides, next 4 coats of white hard-sandable gesso were applied to only the sealed birch top and hand sanded between coats. This step creates a hard flat surface to create on.  Lastly, four coats of Marine grade varnish (which helps with UV protection) were applied to only the hardwood.  The only step you need to do is tape off the Sycamore sides with high quality painter tape and you are ready to create.  This is such a new and exciting way to showcase your next fine art project, resin project or whatever you can dream up!

All of our substrates are handcrafted, Heirloom quality and will last for generations to come.   Unlike the warped, unlevel, low quality wooden cradles you find in craft stores and on-line, this cradle weighs in at an impressive 6 lb 13 oz and it measures a true 23 7/8" x 23 7/8".  The gallery profile depth is 1 3/4" which include the 1/4" Baltic birch top.  The cradle is braced extra well on the back using 7 pieces of 7/8" thick Basswood including corner braces*. Unlike other "wooden" substrates on the market, ours do not contain any MDF, fiber board, nails or staples.  Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

A little bit about American Sycamore.  Its scientific name is Platanus occidentalis and is native to eastern and central US.  When Sycamore is quarter-sawn, it is highly desirable due to its unique grain patterns.  Sycamore is a Premium domestic hardwood that is highly sought after, although not widely available therefore it can be semi-expensive.  This beautiful hardwood is used mainly for veneers, fine furniture, gunstocks, cabinetry, knife billets and turning items like bowls and vases.
